MELAKA, NOV. 8 – Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd (TPM) today presented three (3) computer numerical control (CNC) desktop machine totaling RM300,000 to three (3) Melaka technical learning institutions to enhance the students’ knowledge and practical training on CNC and auto computer-aided design (CAD) modules.
The first Malaysian-made CNC desktop machines were developed by TPM’s engineering arm, TPM Engineering Sdn Bhd (TPME) under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Social Innovation (MSI) initiative.
MOSTI’s Social Innovation initiaves, which is based on outreach to the grassroots level, includes the development or implementation of ideas, whether in the form of products, services or models to meet social needs.
The recipient technical learning institutions were Pusat Latihan Teknologi Tinggi (ADTEC), Kolej Vokasional Melaka Tengah and Politeknik Merlimau Melaka.
The three (3) CNC desktop machines were developed in December 2016 and the first unit was recently installed and presented to Politeknik Merlimau Melaka in conjunction with its Internship and Career Excellence Day carnival.
The handover ceremony was attended by MOSTI Deputy Minister, YBhg. Dato’ Wira Dr. Abu Bakar Mohd Diah, who presented the CNC machine to Puan Hajah Rashidah Mustapa, Director, Politeknik Merlimau Melaka.
Meanwhile, Tuan Hj Tuah Talip, Director of Kolej Vokasional Melaka Tengah and ADTEC Melaka Director, Mohd Zabidin Abd Samad, were also present to symbolically receive their CNC desktop machines from the Deputy Minister.
Also present at the event was Dato Ir. Mohd Azman Haji Shahidin, TPME Chairman, who is also the TPM President and Chief Executive Officer.
Mohd Azman said the added value of the Malaysian-made CNC desktop machines is to serve the needs of the technical learning institutions in efforts to provide students with the practical knowledge based on industry reality and standard.
He said the CNC desktop machines were developed using local fabricated parts and integrated with an industrial controller as against the usage of a PC-based controller in a typical CNC desktop machine.
“The locally-developed CNC desktop machine is 30% – 50% cheaper compared to other imported brands. Another major advantage is the prompt after-sales service and technical support, given that the machine is fabricated by TPME’s in-house specialists. TPM also hopes that this effort will further enhance MOSTI’s efforts to empower the science, technology and innovation culture among students,” added Azman.
TPME will provide special training and courses for lecturers and students in the modules on CNC Machine Designing, Computer-aided Design and Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM), CNC Machine Assembly and CNC Machine Maintenance.
Azman said the reason TPME has also dedicated its engineering efforts into the CNC machining sector was because global engineering industry (ranging from automotive, oil and gas, aerospace to shipbuilding, power plants and semiconductor among others) would require the machining of parts and components.
“The machining process is a highly viable and lucrative business of the industrial engineering sector. In Malaysia alone, the CNC machining sector is estimated to be worth more than RM10 billion annually,” he added.
