Tpm perlis biotech leading the herbal industry in northern region

KANGAR, PERLIS, AUGUST 8 – Technology Park Corporation Sdn Bhd (TPM) through its subsidiary, TPM Biotech Sdn Bhd (TPM Biotech) is leading the herbal industry of the northern region, especially Perlis, with strong support from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the Perlis State Government.

Since its inception, TPM Biotech has successfully sured contract manufacturing services of the production of herbal health drinks and fruit-based products from homegrown enterprises such as D’Yom Herbs Sdn Bhd, Perlis Forestry Department, Sofika Enterprise and Puri Asli Resources.

The collaboration between D’Yom Herbs and TPMB was officially witnessed by Perlis Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azlan bin Man, and MOSTI Deputy Secretary General, Dato’ Dr. Azhar Haji Yahaya at an Teaming Agreement exchange ceremony following the opening of the two-day Herbal, Halal and Biotechnology Carnival for Northern Zone 2015 this morning.

D’Yom Herbs was represented by its Executive Chairman, Datuk Halim Yom, while TPMB was represented by its Chairman, Dato’ Ir. Mohd Azman Haji Shahidin, who is also the President and CEO of Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd (TPM).

According to Azman, the RM21 million TPM Perlis Biotech Centre started operations at the end of 2012 and was operating at about 60% capacity prior to the collaboration with D’Yom Herbs in June this year.

“Since the inception of TPM Perlis Biotech Centre, we have been able to assist with the development 80 herbal drinks and natural based products. Of this more than 50 of them have been successfully commercialized by the entrepreneurs. In addition, in terms of our contribution to helping enterprises to generate sales income, it is estimated to be in excess of RM2 million since the start of our operations here in Perlis,” he added.

On the organizing of the two-day carnival jointly with MOSTI and Perlis State Government, Azman said it was aimed at heightening public awareness and to boost the growth of the herbal, halal and biotechnology sectors in the Northern region, especially Perlis.

He said the event would be an eye-opener for existing and would be biopreneurs and entrepreneurs in the Northern region, especially those in Perlis, to explore and seize the opportunities that these three sectors have to offer.

The carnival at the TPM Perlis Biotech Centre is expected to attract more than 1,500 participants, both young and old, from all walks of life. It features a slew of activities to give participants a thorough insight into the abundant business opportunities offered by the herbal, halal and biotechnology sectors.

In addition, a showcase of 40 exhibitors featuring locally produced herbal and biotech products will be on display. Other activities include educational programmes for children from 12 years old and above and lucky draws with total prizes worth RM2,000.00.

For the business sector, there will be seminars by experts on the opportunities in development of halal products, certification and application procedures; information on the available grants for development of biotech products; and marketing opportunities of biotech products at national level and sharing of success stories by biopreneurs and entrepreneurship.

TPM Biotech offers contract manufacturing of herbal products and laboratory services which have made them a one-stop center for many entrepreneurs. The recognition by JAKIM in appointing them as the panel laboratory for Halal analysis is another key achievement that gives TPMB the edge for halal certification.

Technology Park Malaysia Sdn Bhd, an agency of MOSTI, has an integrated infrastructure, facilities and support services to assist technopreneurs and entrepreneurs who are keen to commercialize their ideas in the four industry clusters, namely, ICT, Engineering, Biotechnology and Green Technology.
